Impact 5: High Impact on Air Quality in Cities during the Heating Season

A major driver for increasing the efficiency and emissions performance of biomass heating products in Europe are those air quality concerns which are directly attributable to biomass combustion in cities during the heating season. By achieving the other impacts, BioMaxEff will also be able to achieve a large impact on air quality in cities during heating season. Highly efficient and low emission products can deliver much more heat and emit much less harmful emissions per kg of fuel used. With greater market penetration and a corresponding increase in products sold, the short term impacts on air quality are expected to be significant in areas where biomass heating products will be abundant. WP8 will generate maps of the air quality impact on urban areas for different scenarios.
